Restaurant Review: The Fatty Bao (Bombay)

Bangalore’s flourishing restaurant ‘The Fatty Bao’ made it’s Bombay debut barely a couple of months ago and is already fast becoming the go to place for Asian cuisine. Well it also helps that no other place actually serves such delicious baos.

20150904_202636My visit to The Fatty Bao happened a week earlier and my sole agenda was to try out their baos. I love baos, but unfortunately hadn’t come across a place in Bombay yet that served this fluffy deliciousness as per my expectations. I tried out two different baos off the menu; The Patty and Teriyaki Glazed Chicken.

The Patty

The Patty

The Patty was basically minced lamb, lettuce and gherkins topped with mayonnaise and wrapped in the fluffiest and lightest bao bun I had eaten in ages. Even before I tried anything else from the menu, I already knew I had found my favourite!

Teriyaki Glazed Chicken

Next up was the Teriyaki Glazed Chicken which too was high on taste, especially the topping of the spiced mayonnaise and pickled cucumber that enhanced the flavour.

Pork Gyoza

In addition to the baos, I also tried their Pork Gyoza, which was succulent and tasted fantastic. I love gyozas, and this was probably one of the better gyozas I’ve had in Bombay. Terrific flavours and the fact that they didn’t scrimp on the meat makes this a 10 on 10 dish.

Tuna Tatare

The last dish I tried was the Tuna Tartare, which was tuna cubes (cooked with chilli oil, garlic, ginger and scallions)  paired with spicy watermelon and cucumber and topped with yuzu gel and sweet potato chips. This dish in particular was very well plated and looked quite gourmet. the odd combination of flavours though did not work for me at all. I was quite skeptical about the dish from the very beginning and truth be told, this was my least favourite, I will probably not be ordering this again. But who knows, maybe your palate may actually find this tasty.

Ho Gin Min

Ho Gin Min

The food was accompanied by some of their signature gin based cocktails- Ho Gin Min and  Double Jade, I preferred the Ho Gin Min, it was quite good, we had 4 cocktails in all along with the food. While I would have loved to try some of the sushi and the main course, I was too stuffed with their generous portions of the starters. The cost for all for all of this came to Rs. 3700 approx. Yes while the pricing is definitely on the higher side, it worth a visit and some more.

Location: Summer Ville, Junction 14th, 33rd road, Linking road, Bandra West.
